Let’s start this new series about micro markets by going for a name change. Can we please agree to do away with the ‘micro market’ tag? Why? Well, my experience has taught me that the term ‘Micro Market’ has done more harm than good in this nascent sector, because it confuses the very people that have to ‘get it’ for ‘it’ to work.

Talking to FMs and HR managers, my colleagues and I get the distinct impression that they think a micro market is the kind of retail outlet Apu runs in The Simpsons. And once the subject of The Simpsons as been introduced into a business presentation, it’s a tough job to steer the meeting back on course.

D’oh!

That’s why, here at Three Square Market, we’ve coined another term: Breakroom Market. ‘

Employees love breakroom markets… what are they?

I’m assuming, since we’re sponsoring this series of articles with Planet Vending, the chances are that if you’re reading this, you’re a vending operator. You’re probably looking at this concept as, potentially, a way of winning more business and making more money. So let me put it this way: a breakroom market is a self-contained store that operates in the closed environment of your client’s business premises, with the sole objective of satisfying the everyday needs of their staff. The term ‘everyday needs’ could mean anything from food and beverages to, well… anything.

Breakroom markets are  self-contained stores that operate in closed environments

One of the greatest benefits of a breakroom market is that nothing is set in stone; it is completely customizable to meet the needs of your clients’ personnel. And if, down the road, they want to change anything, then that won’t present you, as the service provider, with any problems at all. There is just more adjustability with breakroom market planograms!

From fresh food and drink, snacks and refreshments, to uniform requisites, to PPE items, stationery, fondue sets, cuddly toys – (didn’t he do well?) – your client can offer anything for sale.

Employees Love Breakroom MarketsWell, I would say that, wouldn’t I? But I’ve got a pretty good ‘expert witness’ I can call to the stand, who goes by the name of ISAP. (Increased Sales And Profitability). The majority of breakroom markets go into B&I as the direct replacement of a ‘traditional’ vending offer and the numbers don’t lie. They demonstrate that more people shop in-house more often, spending more money per visit than before on a wider variety of products, compared to the time when vending machines were all that was available.

You don’t need to be a retail guru to work out why…

  • Staff don’t have to leave the premises to get the lunch they want, so they’re not wasting part of their ‘hour’ to do so. It means they get to spend more of their time doing what they want to do.
  • Fresh, Healthy Selections: There’s huge (and growing) demand for food that’s good for body and soul and a breakroom market is the place to get it. See that apple? Pick it up, inspect it 360. Smell it. Like it? Then buy it. You can’t do that when it’s in a vending machine.
  • Staff can save money: By and large, they’ll spend less on the healthy options available in a breakroom market than they will in a take-away.
  • Staff can choose between a variety of payment options such as smartphones, credit cards, prepaid cards, payroll deduction, employer subsidy, market account, corporate account, guest passes… (whisper it – they can even use cash!)
  • Promotions, Coupons, Rewards, Loyalty Points, Vouchers and Gift Cards are all available with a breakroom Market.  Employees love to come into their market and see what new savings are available to them.
  • With a breakroom market there’s a continuous rotation of new products to banish boredom!  It keeps the old taste buds fresh; because you never know what new goodies are waiting to be discovered.

And finally, if the employer didn’t believe the breakroom market was a great food at work solution, he wouldn’t name it as one of the ‘perks’ of the job. US marketing consultants Bachtelle report that in 2011, there were about 950 micro markets in the U.S. By 2015, there were about 13,000. By the end of 2016 there were around 17,000. That says a lot, doesn’t it? And I know I’m not alone in believing that the UK is poised right now to experience a similar explosion of breakroom markets.

So, there you have it. A breakroom market at work is something staff regard as a boon, an advantage; a reflection of their company’s interest in their well-being. Take it to the market, folks: I think you’ll find that you’re pushing on an open door…
